Former FHSU students seek separate trials

Attorneys for two former Fort Hays State University students accused of beating a fellow student to death are seeking separate trials.

Luis A. Llamas, 24, San Diego, and Jaime R. Lopez III, 24, Chula Vista, Calif., are set to be tried together in August on charges of second-degree murder, aggravated battery and intimidation of a witness.

Their attorneys also will argue for a change of venue next week before District Judge Tom Toepfer.

Fort Hays State University freshman Clint W. Johnson, 18, of Healy, was beaten last November in a parking lot. He died two days later.

Bradley D. Deary, 21, Smithville, Texas, made a deal with prosecutors to testify against the others. He pleaded guilty April 26 to aggravated battery.

Llamas and Deary were members of the university’s football team.
