Jewell F. ‘Joe’ West Jr.

aServices for Jewell F. “Joe” West Jr., 78, Lawrence, will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Zion United Church of Christ in Kansas City, Kan. Private burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery.

Mr. West died Monday, May 10, 2004, at his home.

He was born June 26, 1925, in Kansas City, Kan., the son of Jewell F. and Helen West. He lived in the Kansas City area most of his life.

Mr. West worked for Thompson Hayward Chemical Co. for more than 40 years. He served in the military during World War II.

He was an active Mason and member of the Blue Lodge, High Twelve, Chanters and Abdullah Shrine in Kansas City. He was a longtime member of Zion United Church of Christ, where he served on the council and was in the men’s chorus.

He married Doris Hartman on Jan. 15, 1947, in Phoenixville, Pa. She survives of the home.

Other survivors include a son, Jewell F. III, Leavenworth; a daughter, Cindy S. West, Lawrence; and a sister, Clara Jean Stephens, Austin, Texas.

A grandson died earlier.

Family will receive friends from 10 a.m. until service time Wednesday at the church.

The family suggests memorials to Douglas County Visiting Nurses Assn., sent in care of Warren-McElwain Mortuary.
