Jaguars shine at KVL

After morning downpours hit hours before the start of the Kaw Valley League golf tournament Monday at Eagle Bend Golf Course, one might think wet playing conditions would have been the biggest obstacle.

Nope.

Although some holes were transformed into giant water hazards, humidity was the word of the day following the event.

“It seems like the heat got to a bunch of them,” Mill Valley coach Dave Zuckerman said.

Maybe, but Zuckerman’s Jaguars stayed cool enough to win the tournament, posting a team score of 320. Basehor-Linwood and Kansas City Piper were right behind at 323 and 326.

“They’re thinking golf more,” said Zuckerman of his club, whose six golfers averaged 81.3 strokes. “They’re getting more strategic in their games. They’re sharing information on their game. It’s fun to listen to.”

Mill Valley aside, the area teams got stuck in the slop. Perry-Lecompton finished fifth at 333, but Tonganoxie (364), Santa Fe Trail (379) and De Soto (383) rounded out the bottom of the 10 clubs.

The Jaguars were led by Brian Polcar, a senior transfer from Houston who felt right at home in the humid conditions. Polcar shot a 76 for the third-best individual score and had a shot of getting the best overall score before a double-bogey on 12.

“My short game let me down today,” Polcar said.

He said he hoped to work on his short game before attempting to qualify for the U.S. Open on May 19 in Wichita.

Mill Valley teammate Robbie Merkel posted a 79 to finish in a three-way tie for eighth-best finish.

Perry-Lecompton’s Drew Robbins and Jeffrey Clark of Kansas City Piper, who each shot 74, shared low-score honors.

Perry coach Dennis Vigna said his squad had its best year since 1986.

“We’ve been playing well as a team, but 330 is not a score we usually see,” Vigna said. “Give Mill Valley a lot of credit. They have six guys that can really put it together.”

De Soto golfer Josh Arnold putts on the eighth green during the Kaw Valley League golf tournament. Arnold placed in a tie for fourth Monday at Eagle Bend Golf Course.
