Grover Cleo Guffey

Mr. Guffey died Sunday, May 9, 2004, at Eisenhower Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Leavenworth after a long illness.

He was born Aug. 14, 1920, in Humiston, Iowa, the son of Virl and Gladys Mae Bland Guffey. He graduated from Glenwood (Mo.) High School and from Agricultural Farm School in Unionville, Mo. He moved from Linwood to the McLouth area in 1961.

Mr. Guffey was a mixer controlman and ball mill operator for Lone Star Cement Co. in Bonner Springs for 30 years before he retired in 1984. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and received two Bronze Stars for his service 50 years after his honorable discharge. He was a member of American Legion Post No. 225 in Ozawkie.

He married Norma Jean Glaspie on April 20, 1946, in Novinger, Mo. She died April 5, 1981.

A son, Grover Junior; a granddaughter; and a great-grandson died earlier.

Survivors include three sons, John, Archie, Mo., Melvin, Lakeside, Calif., and Richard, McLouth; two daughters, Mary Lou Guffey, Kansas City, Kan., and Betty Gast, McLouth; a sister, Viola Ziech, Rockford, Ill.; 13 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild.

Friends may call after 1 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home, where family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday.
