Service projects benefit local moms

MOMS Club members regularly participate in service projects to help children and mothers in their communities.

MOMS Club-South, for example, did a Mother’s Day project called “Baskets and Brunch” on behalf of Women’s Transitional Care Services, a center that provides services to women and children fleeing domestic violence.

Chapter members prepared “pampering kits” — baskets filled with nice soaps and bath items, inspirational books, women’s magazines, chocolates and herbal teas — and delivered them Saturday to the center.

The baskets will be given today to residents of the center, which has an unlisted address for security reasons. Up to 19 women and children can live there at one time, according to Sarah Terwelp, the center’s executive director. Mothers who recently have left the shelter also will receive baskets from the MOMS Club chapter.

Chapter members also planned on Saturday to deliver a variety of brunch items — breads, casseroles, fruit juice, milk, coffee and a floral centerpiece — to the center so that mothers there could enjoy a brunch today.

MOMS Club of Lawrence-North, meanwhile, is co-sponsoring a children’s benefit concert featuring the popular children’s musician Jim Cosgrove at 10 a.m. July 10 at the Lawrence Arts Center, 940 N.H.

Proceeds will go to the Erin Andra Wilson Foundation, which provides emotional and financial assistant to families of children who have cancer. The foundation will direct all proceeds from the concert to families in Douglas County.

These are the other event co-sponsors: Pediatric & Adolescent Medicine, PA, 346 Maine; Kerri Lawlor, D.D.S., 4102 W. Sixth St.; Googols of Fun, 4931 W. Sixth St.; the Lawrence Arts Center; and Cosgrove.

Ticket information will be available in June by calling the arts center at 843-2787.
