The Lawrence 299ers’ Duplicate Bridge Club met April 28. Five and a half tables competed in a stratified game that used a Howell movement. Don Brennaman directed the game.

Don Brennaman and Bob Huffman finished in first place in A. Harriet Olson and Betty Spalsbury placed second in A and first in B. Lorene Tebo and Kittie Hagen were third in A.

  • The Lawrence TGIF Duplicate Bridge Club met April 30. Eight and a half tables of competitors participated in a stratified game that used a Mitchell movement. Don Brennaman directed the game.

Playing the North-South cards, Betty Collier and Patt Radford finished in first place in A. Virginia Seaver and Chris Lane finished second in A. Phyllis Brownlee and Sally Davis placed third in A and first in B and C. Chuck Hedges and Yvonne Hedges were second in B.

Competing East-West, Donna Munson and Pat Lombardi claimed first place in A and B. Bebe Huxtable and Ilse Steinhardt placed second in A and B and first in C. Madelyn Jenks and Mona Bell placed third in A and B.

  • The Lawrence Duplicate Bridge Club met Monday for its weekly game. Eight-and-a-half tables competed in a stratified game that used a Mitchell movement. Virginia Seaver directed the game.

Sitting North-South, Terry Tolar and Harry Shaffer finished in first place in A. Sally Taylor and Shirlie Vaughn were second in A and first in B. Chris Lane and Klee Zaricky were third in A and second in B. Judy Bevan and Lynn Hui placed first in C.

Playing East-West, Jerry Sloan and Eldon Herd placed first in A. Donna Johnson and Paul Heitzman took second in A. Don Bush and Bob Huffman were fourth in A and second in B and C. Mary Beth Treece and Bobbie McCorkle claimed first in C.

  • Sam Rabiola received the Lawrence Rotary Club’s Educator of the Year award. Rabiola is an English teacher at Free State High School. He joined the Lawrence public schools in 1987 as an English teacher for Lawrence High School. He has been active in many organizations, including the Lawrence Education Assn. and National Honor Society.
  • The Lawrence Music Club will meet at 1:15 p.m. Thursday in the home of Polly Miranda, 1278 N. 935 Road. The program will feature the winners of the club’s four 2003-2004 musical scholarships. They are Lieke vande Liefvoort, voice; Melanie Hadley, piano; Cathy Sundvold, clarinet; and Abby Huckvale, flute. Shirley Wilcox will recognize 50-year members of the club. The club will conduct installation of officers. Hostesses will be Jackie Smalberg, JoAnne Hicks, Winifred Gallup, Romaine Taylor, Sylvia Frank and Janet Sloop.
  • University Bridge Club announces the winners of its May 1 game. Hosts were George and Ailene Bocquin and Al and Carol Smith.

Blue winners were Al Smith, first; Lois Liebert, second; Alice Akins, third; Don Whitaker, fourth; and Iva Koleber, fifth.

Pink winners were Gladys Dight, first; Ailene Bocquin, second; Gini Wigington, third; Cathy Waller, fourth, and Jean Etherton, fifth.
