Traffic still slow at 23rd and Iowa intersection

The 2300 block of Iowa Street — one of the city’s busiest corridors — has been closed or partially closed since about 11:30 a.m. today as crews have been replacing a utility pole that was broken when a truck snagged a power line.

As of early afternoon, police had three lanes of traffic open on Iowa (one northbound and two southbound lanes), according to Sgt. Mike Pattrick, a police spokesman.

However, during the next couple of hours police will have to periodically shut down the entire street so crews can run electrical wires across the road, Pattrick said.

The accident happenned about 11:15 a.m. when a semi tractor-trailer pulling out of a gas station onto Iowa Street caught a power line, which caused enough pressure to the utility pole to snap it, Pattrick said.

“If you don’t have to traverse that area, don’t,” Pattrick said.
