Sunny skies and record-breaking high temperatures in the 90s are expected for the Lawrence area today.

“For those who love the summer, a day like this is made for you. It’s a sun-filled finale for the work week,” said Matt Sayers, 6News meteorologist. “You’re going to want to make sure the air conditioner works this afternoon in your car. It’s going to be toasty.”

The high will reach 91 by about 3 p.m., surpassing the old record high of 89 set back in 1966.

“The good news is that southerly winds 10 to 20 mph will make it feel a little bit cooler,” Sayers said.

By 3:54 p.m., Lawrence’s official temperature measured at Lawrence Municipal Airport showed that the temperature had climbed to 89, which matched the old record.

Ross Janssen, 6News meteorologist. predicted Thursday afternoon that the temperature would continue to climb through the late afternoon.

“We’re going to stay pretty much in the upper 80s tomorrow and the weekend,” Janssen said.

Friday’s morning low will be 65, climbing to a high of 87, with sunny skies.

The temperature will drop down to 66 Saturday morning, with the high Saturday reaching 87.

“I’m taking the rain out of the forecast for Saturday,” Janssen said. “But I still think we’re going to see some rain on Mothers Day, with scattered storms Sunday afternoon.”

Sunday’s morning low will start at 68, climbing to a high of 85.

Slight chances for thunderstorms are expected for the Lawrence area Monday through Wednesday.
