Herds of bison are bound for the official Kansas quarter.
A design including a buffalo and sunflowers was announced Thursday morning as the official state commemorative quarter, which will be circulating beginning in August 2005.
More than 48,000 state high school students voted on four finalist designs last week. The buffalo also was the most popular choice among students in Lawrence.
Official statewide vote totals were:
- Buffalo, 17,316.
- "Ad Astra" sculpture, 15,755.
- Sunflower with wheat, 11,969.
- Lone sunflower, 3,000.
Officials said they planned to correct the orientation of the buffalo's horns, which the Journal-World reported last week are facing down, not up.
