Women 10th, men last at Big 12 championships

Norman, Okla. — Kansas University’s women’s track team placed 10th and the men finished last Saturday at the Big 12 Conference championships.

Nebraska won the men’s crown with 172 points. Texas claimed the women’s title with 151 points. KU’s men scored six points, while the women notched 38.

KU senior Laura Lavoie placed second in the 1,500 in 4:27.82. Junior Brooklyn Hann placed sixth in the triple jump with a leap of 41-8. She also was eighth in the 100 hurdles in 13.78.

Freshman Octavia Garret finished sixth in the 400 in 55.27. Junior Kim Clark earned seventh in the 800 in 2:10.31.

The women’s 400 relay team of Tiffany Cherry, Duchess Williams, Charisse Bacchus and Garrett finished fifth in a regional-qualifying time of 45.56. Williams, Hann, Garrett and Clark placed fourth in the 1,600 relay in a season-best time of 3:42.42.

For the men, senior T.J. Hackler finished eighth in the high jump at 6-83/4. Junior Chris Jones placed eighth in the 5,000 in 14:40.98.

The 1,600 relay team of Ryan Mathisen, Aaron Thompson, Mark Gdowski and Jeremy Mims placed seventh in 3:13.25.

Next for KU will be the Haylett Invitational on May 15 in Manhattan.

Big 12 regatta canceled

Manhattan — Due to inclement weather Saturday, the Big 12 Conference Invitational could not be run. It was scheduled to feature the three women’s rowing squads in the league — Kansas University, Kansas State and No. 20 Texas. The Jayhawks next will be at the South-Central Sprints on May 15-16 in Oak Ridge, Tenn.
