Topeka ? Kansas lawmakers today sent Gov. Kathleen Sebelius legislation that would increase charges for wireless phones by 50 cents per month.

The fees would go toward the purchase of equipment that would enable emergency responders to locate people who are calling for help using a wireless phone.

“I think it is tremendous for safety,” said State Sen. Karin Brownlee, R-Olathe.

The bill has been more than six years in the making. The House and Senate today approved a conference committee report that sends the measure to Sebelius for her consideration.

Bill supporters said they expect Sebelius will sign the legislation into law.
