Four more Kansas University seniors were surprised during classes Tuesday and given Chancellor’s Student Awards.

Richard Johnson, dean of students and associate vice provost, and Ann Eversole, associate dean of students, presented the awards. Five awards were presented Monday.

This is the first year that KU has presented the awards, which are the only universitywide honors given to students, during classes. In previous years, the university simply sent a letter to winners.

Tuesday’s winners were:

l Catherine Bell, Coffeyville, Rusty Leffel Concerned Student Award. The award is given to two students who demonstrate a concern for furthering the ideals of the university and higher education.

Bell, currently student body vice president, has served four years on Student Senate. She also has served as vice president of Chi Omega sorority.

l Mark DuPree, Kansas City, Kan., Rusty Leffel Concerned Student Award.

DuPree is president of the Big 12 Council on Black Student Government and served two years as KU Black Student Union president. He also is treasurer of Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity.

l Fallon Farokhi, Lawrence, Donald K. Alderson Memorial Award. The award is given to a senior who has “demonstrated loyalty to and interest in the university and who has been active in student activities and services that benefit other students.”

Farokhi has served as president, summer programs coordinator and public relations coordinator for Student Union Activities, and has been chair of the Multicultural Affairs Committee for Student Senate.

l Andy Knopp, Manhattan, Agnes Wright Strickland Award. The award is given to a graduating senior “in recognition of academic record, demonstrated leadership in matters of university concern, respect among fellow students and indications of future dedication to service to the university.”

Knopp is student body president. He also has been president of the Interfraternity Council.
