Agency: Roger Hill Volunteer Center

Address: 2518 Ridge Court, Room 104

Contact number: 865-5030

The Roger Hill Volunteer Center is coordinating the Spring Day of Caring on April 24. This event aims to connect volunteer groups to needs in the community for a day of service. Friends, co-workers or other groups can form a volunteer team and will be matched to a project to provide assistance to a charity or nonprofit organization in the community. Some project examples include improving play equipment, landscaping, newsletter folding or yard work for homebound seniors. Projects are available to suit most people.

Immediate volunteer needs

  • The annual Kansas Relays will be April 15-17 in Lawrence and volunteers are needed for the event. Volunteers will help deliver food to officials who can’t leave their events, direct athletes from one area to another, post results, retrieve implements such as shot puts or discuses and answer phones. Those who volunteer for four hours or more will receive a T-shirt and meals while they are working. Informational meetings for volunteers will be at 7 p.m. April 11 and April 12 at Kansas University’s Memorial Stadium. To sign up or for more information, call Debbie Luman at 864-3486.
  • Serenata Farms needs volunteers ages 14 and older to help youths with disabilities participate in horse-riding lessons. Each rider needs three volunteers, one to lead the horse and two to walk on either side and support the rider. A volunteer orientation will be at 7 p.m. April 12 at Serenata Farms in Big Springs. For directions or for more information, call Jennifer or Bonnie at 887-6441.
  • The Lawrence Convention and Visitors Bureau is looking for area nonprofit organizations to participate in the Kansas Chautauqua events June 24-29 in South Park by operating concessions as a fund-raising opportunity. Items sold may be prepackaged, homemade or prepared on-site. Bottled water, soft drinks and tea or lemonade may be sold as well. Organizations must provide needed paper goods, serving containers or utensils. Organizations will receive a 10-by-10 foot open-air booth space with tables and chairs. Electrical hookups will be available, but organizations must provide extension cords. The fee, per booth space, is $25 an evening or $100 for all six nights. For more information, call Debbie White at 865-4499.
