Red Cross changes water safety programs

The Douglas County Chapter of the American Red Cross will be one of 13 chapters nationwide to host a premiere of the organization’s new Swimming and Water Safety Program. Updates to the course are the first in 13 years.

Training in the program will be from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. April 17 at Free State High School, 4700 Overland Drive. The training does not require any skill practice or demonstrations in a pool.

Registration is required, and there is a fee of $15. Those interested should call 843-3550 for more information.

University sets exams

Kansas University has announced the following final examinations:

  • Greg Stutes, economics, “The Distribution of Wealth: A Nineteenth Century U.S. Perspective,” 2 p.m. Friday, 205 Summerfield Hall.
  • Lisa Pluth, history of art, “The Xumishan Grottos and the Iconography of Tang Dynasty Dizang,” 3 p.m. April 6, 208 Spencer Art Museum.
  • Susan E. Smittkamp, hearing and speech (intercampus program for communicative disorders), “Characterization of the Aging Avian Auditory System,” 1 p.m. April 8, Kansas University Medical Center.
  • Anthony C. Adamopoulos, psychology, “Word-Meaning Inhibition in Discourse Processing,” 1 p.m. April 9, 537 Fraser Hall.

Lecompton plans kindergarten meeting

An informational meeting for parents with children who will be entering kindergarten in 2004 at Lecompton Elementary School will be from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the school.

Parents will receive information on kindergarten screening and enrollment procedures and get the answers to any questions they may have about the upcoming school year. Parents also can schedule a time for the kindergarten screening on April 8 at the school. A Jefferson County Health Department nurse will be available to discuss immunization forms and Kansas Health Assessment forms.

Children who will be kindergartners in 2004-2005 can visit the kindergarten room and participate in activities while their parents meet in the library. Parents can arrange care for their other children during the screening by calling the school at 887-6343.

State party leaders to talk at Washburn

Topeka — Kansas Democratic Party chairman Larry Gates and Republican Party chairman Dennis C. Jones will present a roundtable discussion about the parties and their roles at 7 p.m. April 7 at Washburn University’s Henderson Learning Resources Center.

The event is free.
