Unjust penalty

To the editor:

I agree with Ms. Guidry’s letter published in Thursday’s Journal-World. It is absurd to demand inmates pay for health care they need when they may not even be guilty of the crime they are imprisoned for. As an American, I do not expect to be unjustly penalized — but this change might make me pay for a crime I haven’t even committed.

Her point is also well-taken that many prisoners are destitute and unable to pay this fee. Prisoners may well not get the medical care they need because of this change. This, truly, is cruel and unusual punishment. I expect more from our country.
