Roberts finalist at SMU

Kansas University associate head coach Norm Roberts is one of two finalists for the men’s head basketball coaching position at Southern Methodist University, the Dallas Morning News reported today.

The other finalist, the paper indicated, is Oklahoma assistant Jimmy Tubbs.

Roberts, 38, who has worked with head coach Bill Self at KU, Illinois, Tulsa and Oral Roberts, will tour SMU’s basketball facilities today, as will Tubbs, 55. Both interviewed with the 10-person search committee Monday.

Roberts was unavailable for comment.

Texas associate head coach Frank Haith withdrew from the coaching search Monday.

Two coaches who interviewed Monday, assistants Doug Wojcik of Michigan State and Eric Reveno of Stanford reportedly are no longer candidates.

Oklahoma State assistant James Dickey was believed to be on the list of candidates to replace former SMU coach Mike Dement at one time, but did not want to interview until after the season.

Also on the original list was American head coach Jeff Jones.

The Morning News said a coach could be tapped by the end of the week.
