Strip bar customer suffers broken jaw

A Lawrence man’s jaw was broken early Saturday in an incident at a North Lawrence strip bar, Lawrence Police said.

Police were called to Lawrence Memorial Hospital about 1:30 a.m., where the 25-year-old man had gone for treatment. He told officers the incident happened at All Stars, 913 N. Second St.

Because of the man’s injury — he couldn’t speak — police were unable to learn any more information about the incident, Sgt. Mike Pattrick said. It was unclear whether the incident occurred inside or outside the bar.

Cigarette starts fire in barn near Lecompton

A discarded cigarette was blamed for a Sunday morning fire that damaged a barn about five miles southeast of Lecompton, according to a Douglas County Sheriff’s report.

Lecompton firefighters and sheriff’s officers responded shortly before 7 a.m. to the blaze at 1868 E. 950 Road. The building’s owner was identified as David Brobe.

The cigarette started a fire on a couch and caused damage to the building amounting to about $2,000, according to the report.

Arbor Day Foundation offers dogwood trees

Those who join the National Arbor Day Foundation during the month of March will receive 10 free white flowering dogwood trees. New members will also receive a subscription to Arbor Day, the foundation’s monthly publication, and “The Tree Book” with information about planting trees.

The free trees are 6- to 12- inches and are guaranteed to grow, or will be replaced free of charge. They have flowers in spring, scarlet foliage in autumn and red berries in winter. They will arrive during the ideal planting time, from now until May 31, with instructions for planting.

To become a member, send a $10 contribution to Ten Free Dogwood Trees, National Arbor Day Foundation, 100 Arbor Ave., Nebraska City, NE 68410, by March 31.

McTeacher’s Night to benefit three schools

Some Lawrence and Eudora teachers will trade their chalkboards for frying vats March 30 for McTeacher’s Night.

Teachers from South Junior High School and Hillcrest School in Lawrence and Nottingham Elementary in Eudora will work a 4 p.m.-8 p.m. shift at three Lawrence McDonald’s restaurants.

Twenty percent of proceeds during the time will go to the schools’ budgets.

McDonald’s locations for the event will be South Junior High, 901 W. 23rd St.; Hillcrest School, 1309 W. Sixth St.; and Nottingham Elementary, 3241 Iowa.
