Calvary Temple Assembly of God

The eighth sermon in a sermon series called “The Twelve Gates” will be presented at the 10:30 a.m. Sunday service at Calvary Temple Assembly of God, 606 W. 29th St. Terrace. This sermon is titled “The Horse Gate.” The worship service will also mark Missions Sunday, a day of support and prayer for missionaries in the field.

Corpus Christi Catholic Church

A Knights of Columbus breakfast, as well as blood pressure checks, will follow Sunday Masses at Corpus Christi Catholic Church, 6001 W. 15th St.

Reconciliation will be from 4 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Sunday, with evening prayer at 4:30 p.m. The book club will meet at 1 p.m. Monday in Room 210. Adoration will be from 7:30 a.m. to noon Tuesday. Stations of the Cross will be at 7:30 p.m. Friday.

First Baptist Church

The first half of the film “Le Chambon,” based on real events in a French village during World War II and the winner of an International Emmy for Best Drama, will be shown at 1:30 p.m. Monday at First Baptist Church, 1330 Kasold Drive.

The first half of “Le Chambon” lasts about one hour. The screening, sponsored by the church’s “Nifty Fifty Plus” senior adult group, will be followed by discussion and refreshments. Eva Edmands, a Holocaust survivor, will facilitate the discussion. The screening is free and open to the community.

The second half of the film will be shown at 1:30 p.m. April 19 at First Baptist, followed by discussion and refreshments.

First Christian Church

The Rev. David Webb, assistant director for the Church World Service Great Plains Office, will be the guest speaker at the 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. Sunday worship services at First Christian Church, 1000 Ky.

First Presbyterian Church

Elise Young, central and mid-Atlantic regional organizer for Bread for the World, will preach at the 8 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. Sunday worship services at First Presbyterian Church, 2415 Clinton Parkway.

Bread for the World is a nonpartisan, Christian citizen’s movement of more than 48,000 people of different faith backgrounds.

Lenten series continues at 6 p.m. Wednesday in the fellowship hall with a discussion on how people can connect with God’s word. The series focuses on “Six Marks of Discipleship.”

First United Methodist Church

Peacemakers, the new Sunday school rotation for children in preschool through sixth grade, will begin Sunday at First United Methodist Church, 946 Vt.

The children will gather in Brady Hall at 9:30 a.m. and continue in classrooms.

Lenten Communion services continue at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday in the sanctuary. John Paul Johnson will provide special music for this week.

Global Mission Experience will be from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. March 27 at Countryside United Methodist Church, Topeka. This will be an opportunity to meet and talk with missionaries from different countries.

Full Gospel Businessmen’s Fellowship International

The mid-America regional convention of the Full Gospel Businessmen’s Fellowship International will be from Thursday through March 27 at the Topeka Ramada Inn, 420 E. Sixth St.

The convention is called “January 1901 to March 2004 Topeka Outpouring Renewed.”

Lawrence Wesleyan Church

The Rev. Nate Rovenstine, pastor of Lawrence Wesleyan Church, 3705 Clinton Parkway, will conclude the “True or False?” sermon series at Sunday worship services. The series is based on “The Passion of the Christ” film. The final question Rovenstine will address is, “Jesus is Alive: True or False?”

Sunday will also be a day of celebration, as babies will be dedicated during the 10:30 a.m. services. Parents will commit publicly to raising their children according to biblical standards.

Martha and Mary’s Way

Martha and Mary’s Way, a Lawrence-based, interfaith ministry to women, is sponsoring a series of Lenten worship services at noon Wednesdays in the chapel of Plymouth Congregational Church, 925 Vt.

Various Lawrence-area clergywomen lead the worship services.

The Rev. Judy Long O’Neal, pastor of Centenary United Methodist Church, 245 N. Fourth St., and co-director of Martha and Mary’s Way, will lead worship service Wednesday at Plymouth.

The Rev. Angela Lowe, chaplain at Lawrence Memorial Hospital, will lead the worship service March 31.

Mustard Seed Christian Fellowship

Mustard Seed Christian Fellowship, 700 Wakarusa Drive, is having a three-part discipleship course from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Sundays. Each course will last eight weeks, with a break in between. The series started March 7.

“Christ in the Passover,” a Jews for Jesus presentation, will be at 10 a.m. March 28. Using a visual display of traditional Passover elements, the presentation enhances the understanding and appreciation of the Jewish background of the Christian Communion.

The program is open to the community. The speaker will be available to answer questions afterward.

Plymouth Congregational Church

Family Sunday, in which children will remain in worship with their families, will be celebrated at the 9:30 a.m. Sunday service at Plymouth Congregational Church, 925 Vt. The nursery will be open.

Taize services will be at 7 p.m. Friday and April 2 in the chapel. Taize is meditative worship with sung and spoken prayers, periods of silence, Scripture and other readings. This worship style fits in with the spirit and meaning of Lent.

St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church

Extra Masses for Lent are at 7 p.m. Tuesday and 12:10 p.m. Wednesday at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, 1234 Ky.

Stations of the Cross are prayed at 6:30 p.m. each Friday of Lent.

St. John’s Altar Society will be host to its annual St. Patrick’s luncheon at noon Monday in the church hall. Bring a dish to share and your own table service.

St. Margaret’s Episcopal Church

The theme for Sunday at St. Margaret’s Episcopal Church, 5700 W. Sixth St., is “Facing the Largest Obstacle in Life: Fear.”

The children will be involved in a special Lenten activity during the 9 a.m. Sunday service.

The Celebration Singers and Ringers will lead the 10:45 a.m. Sunday service.

The junior and senior high groups will meet for a summer-planning supper after the 5:30 p.m. Sunday service.

Topic for the Lenten Program at Tuesday breakfast, Wednesday evening and Thursday lunch is, “How Can I Pray and Use the Bible as Part of My Spiritual Journey?”

The grief group at St. Margaret’s will meet from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. April 6 to discuss grieving as a family.

Theologian in Residence

The last workshop for the 2004 Theologian in Residence John Dominic Crossan will be at 6:30 p.m. April 11 at Plymouth Congregational Church, 925 Vt. The topic will be Crossan’s autobiography, “A Long Way from Tipperary: What a Former Irish Monk Discovered in His Church for the Truth” (2000).

Trinity Episcopal Church

Trinity young adult group will meet for a potluck at 5:30 p.m. Saturday in the parish hall of Trinity Episcopal Church, 1011 Vt. Guests are welcome to bring a favorite dish and join in this casual event.

Priscilla McKinney, of Plymouth Congregational Church, and Ruth Tierney, Trinity Episcopal’s librarian, will present the adult forum at 9:30 a.m. Sunday. The program, titled “The Work of John Dominic Crossan,” will serve as an introduction to the scholar’s work.

Trinity youth group will prepare and serve dinner Sunday to guests of the Lawrence Open Shelter. Group will meet at 7 p.m. at Trinity Episcopal to prepare the dinner. Volunteers of any age are welcome to participate.

Lenten study with the Rev. Jonathon Jensen is at 5:05 p.m. Wednesday in the Holy Spirit Chapel in the Matthews Center.

Trinity Lutheran Church

Trinity Lutheran Church’s “Nebulous Group,” for those in the age range of young adult — between high school and having a young family — will meet Sunday in the narthex of Trinity Lutheran Church, 1245 N.H., before going out for lunch and fellowship.

Organizers will present information on activities planned for the coming months, including serving lunch at the Lawrence Interdenominational Nutrition Kitchen and a games-and-dessert night.

Unitarian Fellowship of Lawrence

A spiritual celebration, “Welcoming Congregations: Religious Aspects,” will be from 9:30 a.m. to 10:15 a.m. Sunday at the Unitarian Fellowship of Lawrence, 1263 N. 1100 Road.

Nan Scott will present a program, “Saving Harry Potter,” from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Sunday, followed by coffee and fellowship from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

University Community of Christ

Christ’s Cafe is open from 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. Sunday at University Community of Christ, 1900 University Drive.

Youth group members serve breakfast on the third Sunday of each month as a way to create more fellowship opportunities. Donations are accepted to defray expenses and help fund youth activities at the church.

Alice Norris will lead the adult class as it continues to work from the “Power & Light” study series. The lesson this week focuses on “Seeking the Common Good,” with Scripture support taken from 1 Corinthians 12:1-11.

The topic of the 10 a.m. Sunday worship service is “Become a New Creation.” Evangelist Leon Curtis will focus on evangelism and outreach services.

“Live Christ’s Way!” is the theme for the World Conference, scheduled for March 27 through April 4 at the Community of Christ World Headquarters in Independence, Mo.

West Side Presbyterian Church

A three-part exploration of “Jesus Asked: ‘Who Do You Say That I Am?” is being offered by Patricia Slider, interim pastor, at West Side Presbyterian Church, 1024 Kasold Drive.

The theme of the second exploration this Sunday is the Apostle’s Creed. Part three, presented March 28, will be on modern heresies.

The fifth in the Lenten study on “The Common People Heard Him Gladly” will begin at 5:30 p.m. Sunday, preceded by a light snack. This week’s subject is based on Luke 10:38-42. Called “Dangerous Attitudes.” It focuses on Jesus, Mary and Martha.

Dorcas Circle will meet at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the church.
