Tom Waechter and Dana Lattin, Lawrence, announce the birth of a daughter, Sylvia Claire Lattin Waechter, born March 13, 2004, at Overland Park Regional Medical Center. She has a brother, Everett, 3.

Maternal grandparents are Dan and Ferrol Lattin, Lawrence. Paternal grandmother is Sue Waechter, Mexico, Mo.

Great-grandparents are Alice Lattin, Smith Center, and Rolla Sealock, Smith Center.

There will be an open house for Pauline Nunemaker, who is celebrating her 80th birthday, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday at Bismarck Lake Guest House, 1736 E. 1550 Road.

Her children, Diane Nunemaker, Mary and Pat Ross, and Kent and Debbie Nunemaker, will be hosts. She requests no gifts.

She was born and raised in Grant Township and farmed with her late husband, Gene Nunemaker, her parents, Will and Mary Hayden, and now with her children.

Nunemaker is an avid bridge player and quilter. She is active in FCE and many other organizations.

Louise Bradford Gilbert will celebrate her 90th birthday as the guest of honor at a reception beginning at 2 p.m. March 27 at McLouth United Methodist Church. Hosts will be her children, Kathleen and Winder McConnell, and Nancy and Steve Moring, and three grandchildren.

She requests no gifts.

Lia DeRoin, Lawrence, has been named to the fall 2003 semester dean’s list at Northwestern University, Evanston, Ill., by receiving at least a 3.75 grade-point average.

Roseanne Smith has been selected as a semifinalist for the 2004 American Quilter’s Society Quilt Show and Contest April 21-24 in Paducah, Ky. Smith has been chosen to join 425 others in the annual competition. Her domestic home machine-made work, Feathered Fancy, measures 90 inches wide by 90 inches deep and represents hundred of hours of quilting work. It will be part of the annual quilt exhibition.

Gregory and Lisa Akagi, Lawrence, announce the birth of a daughter, Sarah Toku Akagi, born Feb. 26, 2004, at St. Joseph Health Center in Kansas City, Mo. Maternal grandparents are Jerry and Janet Ford, Lee’s Summit, Mo. Paternal grandparents are Genzo and Lillian Akagi, Ulysses.

Joseph T. Collins, adjunct curator of herpetology at the Sternberg Museum of Natural History, Fort Hays State University, and adjunct herpetologist with the Kansas Biological Survey at Kansas University, has received a $10,500 grant from the South Dakota Department of Game, Fish & Parks to conduct a diversity survey of amphibians, reptiles and turtles found in Custer State Park in the Black Hills of southwestern South Dakota.

John Stoklosa, KU senior, and Andrew Sindorf, Eudora High School senior, will be among those who help with the project.

Gabe Lewis-O’Connor, a 2000 graduate of Lawrence High School, appeared in Lawrence University’s recent production of “Les Mamelles de Tiresias.” Lewis-O’Connor portrayed Presto, a gambler who loves playing roulette. This was his third operatic role at the university in Appleton, Wisc. He is the son of James Lewis and Nancy O’Connor, Lawrence.

Lisa Lewin, a 2002 Lawrence High School graduate, was named a University Scholar for the 2003-2004 academic year by Kansas University. University scholars are selected on the basis of academic records, commitment to their education, intellectual promise and evaluations by faculty members. Students must have a 3.8 grade-point average to be eligible. University scholars work with a faculty mentor and the faculty mentor/student association is expected to continue through the student’s undergraduate career. Lewin’s mentor is John Head, professor in the School of Law. She is the daughter of Tom and Phyllis Lewin, Lawrence.

Sara Heckman, Lawrence, and Leah Overbaugh, McLouth, received Garvey Competitive Scholarships from Washburn University. Recipients are selected based on the results of a comprehensive examination administered in February.

Chris Trepinski, Free State High School junior, and Annie Parr, Baldwin High School sophomore, participated in the General Federated Women’s Club’s District 2 auditions March 7 at Baldwin First United Methodist Church. They were sponsored by the GFWC Lawrence Classics. Trepinski and Parr received a certificate of merit. Trepinski was named the overall winner and received a $200 scholarship.

With their District 2 awards, Parr and Trepinski will compete today at the GFWC State Music auditions at Bethany College in Lindsborg.

Trepinski is the son of Robert and Celeste Trepinski, Lawrence. Parr is the daughter of J.D. and Nancy Parr, Baldwin. Both students study piano with Trilla Lyerla, associate professor of music at Baker University.

Jim Ashcraft, a senior at Lawrence High School, has received Kansas State University’s Foundation Scholarship.

Kristen Jordan, Courtney Luthye and Henry Schimke, all of Lawrence, made the dean’s list during the fall 2003 semester at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
