Wichita ? In a move to generate revenue, Wichita officials are considering whether to sell confiscated weapons used in crimes.

City ordinances currently require the city to either destroy the guns or sell parts to federally licensed gun dealers. But the City Council on Tuesday signaled its support for amending the ordinance to generate revenue by selling weapons intact to licensed dealers.

City Councilman Paul Gray estimated the city could bring in several thousand dollars from the sales.

In an average year, according to the Wichita police department, officers confiscate up to 1,000 weapons.

Opponents noted that the city sometimes runs a gun buy back program to get guns off the street, and said now the city would be putting guns back on the streets.
