Charles Albert ‘Bert’ Reynolds Jr.

Mass of Christian Burial for Charles Albert “Bert” Reynolds Jr., 80, Lawrence, will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Corpus Christi Catholic Church. Burial will follow in Mount Calvary Cemetery.

Mr. Reynolds died Sunday, March 14, 2004, at his home.

He was born April 1, 1923, in Colorado Springs, Colo., the son of Charles Albert and Lulu Mae (Highsmith) Reynolds. He received a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering in 1944, a master’s degree in chemistry in 1946 and a doctorate in chemistry in 1947, all from Stanford University, where he was elected to Phi Beta Kappa and Sigma Xi.

Mr. Reynolds came to Kansas University in 1947 as an assistant professor of chemistry. He was assistant director of the operations research group of the U.S. Army Chemical Corps from 1951 to 1953 and technical director of Edgewood Arsenal in Maryland from 1967 to 1969. He was associate chairman of the KU chemistry department from 1961 to 1967 and 1980 to 1987. He was secretary of the KU chapter of Phi Beta Kappa for several years, a member of the KU Athletic Corp. board and past president of the KU section of the American Chemical Society. He wrote “Principles of Analytical Chemistry,” which was published in 1966, and authored more than 30 scientific papers in analytical chemistry. He was identified as one of five outstanding educators by the Torch Chapter of Mortar Board and retired in 1988.

He married Priscilla Anne Lynch on Feb. 20, 1953, in Long Green Valley, Md. She survives of the home.

Other survivors include three sons, Thomas A., Kansas City, Mo., John W., Lee’s Summit, Mo., and Joseph P., Gaithersburg, Md.; three daughters, Marcia Farley and Vickie Quillin, both of Lawrence, and Amy Daub, Parkersburg, W.Va.; and 15 grandchildren.

Family will receive friends from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday at Warren-McElwain Mortuary.

The family suggests memorials to the KU chemistry department or the church, sent in care of the mortuary.
