Pedestrian struck, killed near Teepee Junction

A pedestrian in his 20s was killed early Sunday morning on U.S. Highway 24-40 near the Teepee Junction, according to the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office.

The man’s name hadn’t been released by midafternoon Sunday because relatives hadn’t been notified.

The incident occurred about 1:30 a.m. and the first officers at the scene found the man lying in the south ditch of the roadway, Undersheriff Ken McGovern said. Lawrence-Douglas County Fire & Medical personnel responded and the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

Witnesses told officers the victim was struck by a vehicle that left the scene.

The driver of that vehicle later returned while officers were investigating the accident. The investigation is continuing, and no arrest was made, McGovern said.
