Bell latest Phillie felled by injury

The Philadelphia Phillies keep getting banged up.

David Bell was shut down by yet another injury when a shoulder problem flared up Friday, the latest in a series of spring-training setbacks for the Phillies.

Philadelphia already had lost slugger Jim Thome and closer Billy Wagner because of finger injuries when Bell felt pain in his right shoulder.

Bell hurt himself taking batting practice before a game against Atlanta. The third baseman left the park to undergo an MRI test, and was scheduled to be examined Monday in Philadelphia.

“We just have to wait and see,” Phillies manager Larry Bowa said after a 4-1 win over the Atlanta Braves in Clearwater, Fla. “There will be a Plan B if there’s something definitely wrong.”

At Fort Myers, Fla., Boston manager Terry Francona is reconsidering his early season rotation after Byung-Hyun Kim was sidelined at least a week because of an inflamed shoulder.

“I don’t think we think B.K. is going to miss any significant time (but) we’ll have about six different plans to cover everything,” Francona said.

Keith Foulke pitched a perfect inning in his Boston spring debut and David Ortiz hit his third homer, leading the Red Sox over the Los Angeles Dodgers, 5-1.

In Melbourne, Fla., Montreal third baseman Tony Batista was diagnosed with chicken pox and will miss at least one week of spring training.

In Jupiter, Fla., Josh Beckett pitched on three days’ rest again. This time, it didn’t create a stir.

Beckett gave up four runs in the first inning, then dominated in the next three as the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Florida Marlins, 5-2. Cody McKay hit a three-run triple in the first against the World Series MVP.
