Unity was goal

To the editor:

I’m extremely disappointed that President Bush has chosen to support a constitutional amendment defining marriage (Journal-World, Feb. 25). I recall a campaign promise to unite, rather than polarize, America. Still, it’s not surprising. The right wing is restive and, with proper leadership and manipulation, this will be the majority view.

If “sanctity of marriage” is the real concern, why not unite to reverse the tide of unwed cohabitation and divorce that is making married households the minority in America, rather than denying this institution to a small group of Americans? Government intrusion into the fundamental rights of a minority can have no positive outcome. Let’s hope that bigotry does not become enshrined in our constitution. Better, let’s unite to prevent it.
