Calvary Temple Assembly of God

The Rev. Marshall Lackrone will present the sixth installment in the sermon series, “The Twelve Gates of the City,” at 10:30 a.m. Sunday at Calvary Temple Assembly of God, 606 W. 29th St. Terrace.

Ecumenical Christian Ministries

A discussion titled “Gay Marriage, Religious Freedom and Law” will be from noon to 1 p.m. Thursday at Ecumenical Christian Ministries, 1204 Oread Drive.

It is sponsored by ECM and Kansas University’s department of religion.

Paul Mirecki, KU professor of religious studies, will give the introduction.

The speakers will be Stephen McAllister, professor and dean of the KU Law School and interim director of the Dole Institute of Politics; and Sherry Wright, a lecturer in KU’s department of religious studies, who teaches courses on the Supreme Court and religious issues.

The event is open to the community.

Faith Church of the Nazarene

The Rev. Fred Otto and Donna Otto will be featured at the 10:45 a.m. Sunday worship service at Faith Church of the Nazarene, 1020 Kasold Drive.

The couple are serving as missionaries to Africa and are home temporarily.

There will be a potluck dinner in the fellowship hall after the service.

Both activities are free and open to the public.

First Christian Church

Two forums on “The Church’s Response to Homosexuality” will be at 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. Sunday at First Christian Church, 1000 Ky.

The forums are during regular worship service times.

One of the church’s missionary families, the Kerstetters, will give a brief presentation of their mission experience at 10:10 a.m. Sunday in the fellowship hall.

An informational meeting to introduce people to First Christian Church will be at 4 p.m. Sunday in the fellowship hall. It is called “Pie with Pastor Randy.”

First Presbyterian Church

Members of First Presbyterian Church, 2415 Clinton Parkway, will meet from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. Sunday to discern the direction, vision and priorities for the church and congregation. There will be a brainstorming session to focus on two areas of ministry that the Session has determined are some of the highest priorities.

Fellowship time begins at 10 a.m.

Evening worship at 5 p.m. Sunday will be a simple experience of praise, reflection and celebration, a way to journey through the season of Lent.

The Lenten Series continues at 6 p.m. Wednesday in the fellowship hall with a discussion about how people can be in relationships that encourage spiritual growth. The series focuses on the “Six Marks of Discipleship.”

First Regular Missionary Baptist Church

The community is invited to participate in the celebration of the third pastoral anniversary of the Rev. Reginald Bachus and Detra Bachus March 14 at First Regular Missionary Baptist Church, 1646 Vt.

The theme of the event is “A God Sent Man (Ephesians 4:11-12),” to reflect Bachus’ commitment to being a humble servant of God.

The Rev. Lemuel E. Wynn, pastor of First Baptist Church of Quindaro, Kansas City, Kan., will deliver the message at the 10:50 a.m. Sunday worship services. The church’s choir, Voices of Faith, will provide the music.

The Rev. C.L. Bachus, Sr., will deliver the message at the 3:30 p.m. Sunday worship service. C.L. Bachus, Reginald’s father, and the congregation of Mt. Zion Baptist Church, of Kansas City, Kan., will be special guests. The Mt. Zion Choir will provide the music.

First United Methodist Church

Boy Scouts Troop No. 52 and the United Methodist Men will be host to a pancake feed from 7:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Sunday at First United Methodist Church, 946 Vt. Cost is $4 for adults, $3 for children.

Confirmation classes begin at 10:45 a.m. Sunday for youths in grades seven through nine who wish to learn about and join the Methodist Church. Michelle Phillips, director of youth ministries, will lead the group.

Also, “Starting Point,” a class for adults wanting to learn more about the Methodist Church, will be at 9:30 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. Sunday in Room 203.

Immanuel Lutheran Church and University Student Center

A series of Lenten services and activities is scheduled Wednesday evenings during March at Immanuel Lutheran Church and University Student Center, 2104 W. 15th St.

The film “The Gospel of John” will be shown at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday in the sanctuary. There will be a Lenten service at 7:30 p.m. The theme is “The Road Home,” the third in a series titled “This Lenten Road.”

The Immanuel Fellowship of Lutheran Youth will participate in a volleyball tournament at 12:30 p.m. Sunday at Topeka Lutheran School, 701 S.W. Roosevelt, in Topeka.

Lawrence Wesleyan Church

In conjunction with pastors from six other Lawrence churches, the Rev. Nate Rovenstine will continue the “True or False?” sermon series, based on the film “The Passion of the Christ,” Sunday at Lawrence Wesleyan Church, 3705 Clinton Parkway.

Sunday’s question will be, “Jesus is the only way to God: True or False?”

The traditional service is at 8:30 a.m. Sunday. The contemporary service is at 10:45 a.m. Sunday school and adult Bible fellowships are at 9:45 a.m. Sunday, followed by a time of fellowship with doughnuts, coffee and juice.

Mustard Seed Christian Fellowship

There will no longer be a Sunday evening service at Mustard Seed Christian Fellowship, 700 Wakarusa Drive. Instead, the church will have a three-part discipleship course from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., starting Sunday. Each course will last eight weeks, with a break between each one.

As part of the ongoing sesquicentennial celebration at Plymouth Congregational Church, 925 Vt., former pastor Jonathan Knight and his wife, Dianne, will visit the church for a potluck dinner at 5:30 p.m. today.

The Rev. Knight will preach at both the 9:30 a.m. and 11:15 a.m. Sunday services.

A soup-and-bread lunch will be served after the 11:15 a.m. service.

Plymouth Women will meet at noon Wednesday for their luncheon in the Mayflower Room. All women are welcome.

The Women’s Conference will be today in Raytown, Mo.

Theologian in Residence

The ninth advance workshop for 2004 Theologian in Residence John Dominic Crossan will be at 6:30 p.m. Sunday at Plymouth Congregational Church, 925 Vt.

Speaker will be John Brewer, a member of the In-Depth Bible Study Group at Plymouth.

This will be the first of two workshops on “The Birth of Christianity: Discovering What Happened in the Years Immediately After the Execution of Jesus” (1998).

There also will be a special presentation by Barry Crawford, professor of religion at Washburn University in Topeka. He is also a member of the Society of Biblical Literature’s Seminar on Ancient Myths and Modern Theories of Christian Origins. Crawford will report on the “early Christ cults in Asia Minor.”

Trinity Episcopal Church

Deacon Rita Tracy will lead the first of two sessions of “Praying with Icons” from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Sunday in the parish hall of Trinity Episcopal Church, 1011 Vt.

The Rev. Jonathon Jensen will present the Sunday adult forum. He will speak on “Responding to the Responses of the General Convention.” The group meets at 9:30 a.m. in the parish hall.

Zane Wilemon, youth director, will teach the youth confirmation class at 9:30 a.m. Sunday in the youth room. Trinity youth will prepare and serve dinner Sunday evening for the clients of the Lawrence Open Shelter.

The Lenten study on the book “Opening the Bible,” led by Jensen, continues from 5:05 p.m. to 5:50 p.m. in the Matthews Center.

A book discussion on the Rev. Barbara Brown Taylor’s “Speaking of Sin: The Lost Language of Salvation” will be from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Sunday in the church library. Deacon Carolyn Graham will lead the group.

Trinity Lutheran Church

The adult forum on “Spirituality @ Work” continues at 9:45 a.m. Sunday at Trinity Lutheran Church, 1245 N.H. Led by Bill Buck and Andrea Parson, the Lenten study focuses on how God can be accessed in the midst of often-hectic daily work lives.

This theme will be continued at the 6:40 p.m. Wednesday discussions. The Rev. Gary Teske will lead a dialogue on connecting ministry and the workplace as a result of visiting one parishioner a week at that person’s place of work. This discussion is preceded by a simple meal at 6 p.m. and followed by a 7 p.m. worship service in the chapel.

Also on the Wednesday schedule is first communion training at 5 p.m. and a study called “Getting at the Gospel” at 7:30 p.m., primarily designed for new members, but open to all wanting to investigate or review Lutheran beliefs.

From 7:30 a.m. to 8:15 a.m. each Monday during Lent, people will gather in the chapel to reflect, share and pray about the lesson for the following Sunday. The communion coffee will be at 10 a.m. Monday in the chapel.

In the learning ministry area, members will meet at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday to discuss plans for a basement renovation project and the search for a director of children’s ministries. Children’s choir and adult choirs also meet Sunday.

Stephen Ministry training continues at 7 p.m. Thursday. It will be preceded by a continuing education session for current Stephen Ministers at 6:45 p.m.

Unitarian Fellowship of Lawrence

A spiritual celebration, “God, Girl Scouts & Religion,” will be from 9:30 a.m. to 10:15 a.m. Sunday at the Unitarian Fellowship of Lawrence, 1263 N. 1100 Road.

A program, “Sesquicentennial Alert,” will be from 10:45 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. Sunday, followed by coffee and fellowship from 11:45 a.m. to 12:45 p.m.

West Side Presbyterian Church

Sunday has been designated “Celebrating the Gifts of Women” at West Side Presbyterian Church, 1024 Kasold Drive.

Women in the church will lead the 11 a.m. worship services. Two members who have served the church for years will be honored.

A special bulletin insert called “Where in the World Are West Side Women?” will list some of the activities the church’s women are involved in.

The mission and stewardship committee will meet at noon Sunday, and the Christian education committee will meet at 1 p.m.

Lesson two in the Lenten study “The Common People Heard Him Gladly” will be from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Sunday.

West Side members will be responsible for serving the noon meal Thursday at the Lawrence Interdenominational Nutrition Kitchen, 221 W. 10th St.
