Jason Giambi showed he hasn’t lost any power with his slimmer physique.

Giambi hit a grand slam in the third inning and the New York Yankees beat the Philadelphia Phillies, 7-5, Friday in Alex Rodriguez’s first spring game in pinstripes.

“I’m still the same hitter,” Giambi said. “In BP, I still hit them as far as I ever have.”

During the offseason, he testified before the grand jury investigating steroid distribution. Giambi, who has denied using steroids, arrived at camp saying he lost four pounds by cutting out junk food.

Rodriguez made his debut at third base, handling four grounders and making one tag play in five innings. He let one ball kick off his glove but recovered in time to get the out at first, where Giambi stretched to pull in a throw that was high and wide.

“I felt pretty comfortable out there,” Rodriguez said.

At the plate, the AL MVP was 0-for-2 with a groundout, a strikeout, and the walk that loaded the bases for Giambi’s slam.

At Fort Myers, Fla., Minnesota center fielder Torii Hunter was injured in a fourth-inning collision with the wall after an unsuccessful attempt to take a home run from Jacob Cruz. Hunter will be re-evaluated today, but the injury is not serious.

Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez stretches for a ball but is unable to come up with the hit by Philadelphia's Jeremy Salazar. Rodriguez made his Yankee debut Friday in Tampa, Fla. New York defeated the Phillies, 7-5.

At Lakeland, Fla., Daryle Ward doubled and scored, and Keith McDonald hit a go-ahead single in the seventh inning for Pittsburgh. Ivan Rodriguez had an RBI and two strikeouts in his second game with the Tigers.

At Jupiter, Fla., Brad Penny pitched three perfect innings in his first action of the spring for Florida. He threw 42 pitches, 26 for strikes.

At Sarasota, Fla., Ken Griffey Jr. returned to Cincinnati’s lineup for the first time since the middle of last season and failed to get a hit during the Reds’ loss to Toronto. Griffey grounded out to second base and took a called third strike before leaving after the fourth inning.

At Phoenix, Matt Erickson drove in Chris Coste with a single to center field in the top the 10th as Milwaukee won its second straight game. Jermaine Dye, trying to bounce back from a dismal 2003 season, drove in the Athletics’ first run.
