ISU routs KU women

? Kansas University’s women’s basketball squad guaranteed itself last place in the Big 12 Conference, falling 79-57 to Iowa State on Thursday at Hilton Coliseum.

The loss means the Jayhawks (9-18 overall, 2-14 Big 12) will play No. 5-seeded Baylor in the Big 12 tournament at 2:20 p.m. Tuesday in Dallas.

Texas A&M also is 2-14 in league play, but the Aggies own the tiebreaker because they beat the Jayhawks earlier this season.

Tamara Ransburg led the Jayhawks with 19 points and seven rebounds Thursday. Crystal Kemp added 10 points for KU, which shot just 33.3 percent (23-for-69) from the field.

KU didn’t make its first basket until Larisha Graves scored 3 1/2 minutes into the game. Midway through the first half, Iowa State led 24-7 and Kansas was 3-for-14 from the field.

Iowa State led by 24 late in the half. Baskets by Katie Robinette and Anne O’Neil in the first minute of the second half gave Iowa State a 51-31 lead and the Jayhawks never got closer than 17 after that.

Erica Junod had 17 points and five assists, Lyndsey Medders added 13 points and Lisa Kriener scored 12 for the Cyclones (14-13, 7-9), who built a 47-31 halftime lead and never were threatened.

Iowa State sank 12 three-pointers, including a 4-for-4 long-range performance by Medders.

Iowa State, seeded ninth, will play eighth-seeded Nebraska in the first round of the Big 12 tournament.
