Student musicians to receive honors

Free State High School sophomore and pianist Kyle Chauvin will be featured Saturday in a Topeka Symphony Orchestra concert — his award for winning the orchestra’s Youth Talent Auditions in late January.

Chauvin will perform the first movement of the “A Minor Piano Concerto” by Edvard Grieg during the concert at 8 p.m. in Washburn University’s White Concert Hall.

Chauvin has studied piano for eight years, the past two as a student of Alice Downs, Lawrence. Chauvin plays violin in the Free State High Orchestra and the Lawrence Youth Symphony. He is the son of Teresa and Keith Chauvin of Lawrence.

Free State High School senior Jessica Kroh of Kansas City, Kan., won the winds division. She has been a student of Kansas University professor Vince Gnojek for three years.

Chauvin, Kroh and the two other award winners will be presented with scholarships during the Saturday concert.

Symposium features KU student research

Forty-five Kansas University undergraduate students will present information on their research findings Saturday during the Multidisciplinary Undergraduate Research Symposium.

The event, from 1 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at the Kansas Union, will include oral, poster, video and musical performance presentations.

Education career day scheduled at KU

Representatives of about 90 school districts from across the country will be at Kansas University Tuesday for the 23rd annual Education Interview Day.

The event, for KU students and alumni, is from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Kansas Union Ballroom. Interviews may be scheduled at the union the day of the event.

Cities with school districts represented will include Dallas-Fort Worth; Houston; St. Louis; Kansas City, Mo.; Lincoln, Neb.; Louisville, Ky.; Chicago; Colorado Springs, Colo.; Wichita; and Topeka.

Co-housing project hires construction company

Neighbors Construction Co. has been selected as general contractor for Delaware Street Commons, Kansas’ first co-housing neighborhood. The company will finalize plans for the $2.8 million residential community over the next few months.

The co-housing neighborhood will include 22 homes, a play area and a common room for group gatherings in the 1200 block of Delaware Street. Cars will stay on the periphery and pedestrian paths will provide transportation within the community.

Construction is scheduled to start this summer.

A public forum about the community will be at 7 p.m. March 18 at 1208 Del. Marci Francisco, former Lawrence mayor, will present “Your Home, Your Neighborhood, Your Community” for discussion.

KU hospital president elected to lead board

Irene Cumming, president and chief executive officer of the University of Kansas Hospital, has been elected chair of the board of directors of the University HealthSystem Consortium.

The consortium is an alliance of academic health centers across the country. The group helps its 91 members pool resources, improve clinical and operating efficiencies, and influence health care issues.

Cumming has served on the consortium’s board of directors for eight years.
