Time at KU flew for Nash

Jayhawk seniors to speak after Nebraska game

Bryant Nash remembers his freshman year at Kansas University as if it was yesterday.

“Kenny Gregory and I were walking on campus and he was telling me, ‘Get ready, it’s going to go by fast,'” Nash said of his former teammate.

“That was after a week or two of practice. I was like, ‘I’m already on the countdown.’ Now it’s my last week in the fieldhouse. He was right, it’s gone by fast.”

Nash, a 6-foot-7 senior from Carrollton, Texas, tonight will start his second game of the season and fourth of his career as part of Senior Night festivities against Nebraska.

Tip for the game between the Jayhawks (18-7, 10-4 Big 12 Conference) and Cornhuskers (16-9, 6-8) is an unusually early 6:30 p.m.

Fans are encouraged to arrive early because introductions of seniors Nash, Jeff Graves and Brett Olson will start about 6:20 p.m.

The seniors will speak to fans after the game.

“There will be a lot of emotions, a lot of thanking people,” said Nash. “We’re going to find out how the seniors feel about being here, the ups and downs.”

Of Nash’s own career — he has career marks of 1.6 points and 1.5 boards in 116 games — he said, “It could have been better. That’s on me. I just want to help this team go as far as possible now and try to play somewhere next year.”

Olson accepting: Olson, a senior walk-on from Chanute, is OK with the fact he won’t be starting tonight’s game.

“He is coach. I respect his decisions,” Olson said of coach Bill Self. “I have to think what I’d do if I was in his shoes. I don’t know how much I’d trust me. I haven’t played any minutes that really counted. All I want is to win the game.”

Of the Jayhawks’ future, Olson said: “I think our team will be making a lot of noise (in postseason). You can’t really go anywhere without some hardships.”

Graves reflects: Graves, a senior center from Lee’s Summit, Mo., was asked what he would remember most about his two years at KU.

“The reality of the ‘Beware of the Phog’ thing,'” Graves said. “Last year, we played Texas and Arizona here. It was so loud I couldn’t hear myself think. I lost myself in the game. I saw myself looking up (in rafters) and it said, ‘Beware of the Phog.’ I’m like, ‘Yeah, you better beware.'”

Padgett out: KU freshman David Padgett (right ankle sprain) did not practice Tuesday and won’t play tonight, Self said. Padgett was walking without a limp, however, and hasn’t been ruled out for Sunday’s game at Missouri. Nobody else is expected to miss tonight’s game.

Get there early: KU’s game will start at 6:30 p.m. for TV. The Jayhawk network games cannot conflict with Big 12 TV games, and there’s an 8 p.m. game tonight between Texas A&M and Oklahoma.

Round two: KU junior Keith Langford on tonight’s matchup against a team that beat KU by 19 points in Lincoln, Neb. “It’s definitely an emotional game. It’s the seniors last time playing in the fieldhouse. They beat us in Lincoln, but in my mind they better let it go. It’ll be different this time.”

Recruiting update: C.J. Henry, a 6-3 junior from Oklahoma City, may visit KU this spring. He is the son of former KU player Carl Henry.

“If the visit does not take place this spring, it will definitely take place in the fall,” Henry told Shay Wildeboor of rivals.com. “Kansas is one of my top choices, and they are right at the top of my list.”

He’s also considering Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Illinois, Kentucky, Louisville, St. John’s, Texas, Texas Tech and Tulsa.
