Paramedic shot while at house fire released from Kansas City hospital

? A paramedic who was shot and wounded while responding to a house fire last week was released Monday from the hospital.

“I’m very lucky,” said Mary Seymour. “Very lucky.”

Seymour, 39, was shot twice in the chest Feb. 23 after arriving on the scene of the fire in south Kansas City.

Eric Dooley, a spokesman for the Metropolitan Ambulance Services Trust, said that while Seymour’s recovery would be a “long road,” it was expected to be a complete one.

“My legs are pretty weak, just because I haven’t been getting around much in the last week,” Seymour said. “Breathing — I can’t take a real deep breath still.”

Dooley said it was unclear when Seymour would return to work with MAST.

“It could take two to three months, but knowing how quickly she’s healed up so far, it could be sooner,” Dooley said. “We didn’t expect her to be out of the hospital this quickly.”

Seymour was among a group of paramedics, firefighters and police who came under fire shortly after they arrived at the scene of a fire and explosion at two homes in south Kansas City.

After Seymour was shot, police provided covering fire while six firefighters carried her about 100 yards to safety.

They bandaged her wounds on the spot and got her to the hospital within 30 minutes.

Seymour was shot twice in the chest. Bullets went through her right lung, one grazing her heart. Two heart surgeons and a trauma surgeon worked on her for four hours to repair the lung and heart wounds.

By Monday, Seymour was feeling better both physically and mentally.

“I don’t really feel anger — I guess I feel more grateful nobody else got hurt,” she said. “It makes you a little mad that someone would do that to you and your friends.”

Police later found two set of human remains at the scene. One set was identified as those of the homeowner, Donin E. Wright, 62. Wright’s girlfriend, Janet Clark, has been missing since the explosion, but the other set of remains has not been identified. Police also have not identified a suspect in the shooting.

Police said they also recovered from the scene about 20 guns, parts of at least 20 pipe bombs, parts of three large gun safes and thousands of rounds of live and discharged ammunition.
