Martin services

Services for Carolee Drake Martin, 86, Lawrence, are pending and will be announced by Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home.

Mrs. Martin died Friday, June 25, 2004, at Brandon Woods Retirement Community.

She was born Sept. 26, 1917, in Ottawa, the daughter of Carl J. and Bessie M. Tedrow Drake.

Mrs. Martin graduated in 1935 from Liberty Memorial High School, Lawrence.

She lived in Whittier, Calif., before returning in 1951 to Lawrence. After raising her family, she worked at the Kansas University division of biological sciences and at the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. She retired in 1980 as an administrative assistant.

Mrs. Martin was a co-founder of the Lawrence Girl Scout Council, was instrumental in purchasing the land for Hidden Valley Camp for Girl Scouts and was longtime treasurer of Hidden Valley Girl Scouts.

She married W. Melvin Martin on June 5, 1939, in Los Angeles. He died Nov. 27, 1992.

Survivors include two sons, Don Martin, Lawrence, and Jim Martin, Baldwin; two daughters, Diane Martin, Lawrence, and Mary Priddy, San Antonio; a brother, Joe Drake, Lawrence; a sister, Nancy Edgar, Claremont, Calif.; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

The family suggests memorials to Hidden Valley Girl Scouts or American Cancer Society, sent in care of the funeral home.
