Raiders rally to earn split

? After wasting a late lead in the opener against Topeka 400, Lawrence’s Raiders rebounded for a 2-0 win and a doubleheader split in American Legion baseball Tuesday at Topeka Seaman High.

The Raiders led, 2-0, after four innings in the first game but gave up single runs in the next three innings and lost, 3-2. Jake Hoover (1-2) picked up the loss for Lawrence.

In the nightcap, however, the Raiders rebounded behind the solid pitching of Matthew Wingert (2-0) for the 2-0 win. Carl Lisher was 1-for-3 with a double, and Dominick Harrell and Ryan Engel each went 3-for-4 for the Raiders.

Unfortunately, said Raiders coach Reggie Christiansen, those offensive highlights have been few and far between lately — especially in Tuesday’s opener.

“You can’t expect to win those games when you’re swinging the bats as bad as we are,” he said. “The only thing we’re doing is pitching.”

Lawrence (13-7) plays a doubleheader against Topeka Post 1 at 6 p.m. today at Free State.
