Ambush antics have little magic

There are two kinds of people in the world — those who feel they have the right to harass perfect strangers and call it “entertainment,” and those who don’t. And speaking as one of those who doesn’t, I have an ever-growing desire to punch those who do.

Tonight’s dial is awash with such ambush antics. The rural-America-hating folks at Fox offer a “Simple Life 2” (8 p.m., Fox) episode in which the two scrawny wayfarers take jobs at a rustic nudist colony.

The geniuses at NBC offer “T.H.E.M” (7 p.m. and 7:30 p.m), in which a band of smug illusionists band together and call themselves Totally Hidden Extreme Magic. In the first scene, the gang sits down at a casino with a professional gambler. The dealer asks the shaggy youths if they are with a band. They say no, and one of them says that “it sucks” to be considered a boy band. Three of them proceed to use trickery (none dare call it cheating) to draw a royal flush. The unsuspecting card-player’s eyes widen and much confusion ensues. Then the T.H.E.M. boys reveal themselves with a big laugh, but they don’t tell their marks how they pulled it off.

Other stunts include bothering pedestrians, interfering with people on blind dates and disrupting the scene at a coffee house. This being a cheap NBC production, they also visit the set of “Passions” so the network can plug its weird daytime soap. Like the last NBC magic special, this will probably only succeed at making the network’s audience vanish before our very eyes.
