Jay Kooser, Perry, will celebrate his 80th birthday with an open house from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. July 4 at the Perry Community Building on Front Street. He requests no gifts, but cards may be sent to him at 3084 Oak Road, Perry 66073-4321.

  • James Glasnapp, a 1985 graduate of Lawrence High School and a 1990 graduate of Kansas University, received his doctorate of public health from the University of California at Berkeley. James is the son of Doug and Mary Glasnapp.
  • Matthew Hochstetler has been accepted at the Harvard School of Business. He is a 1997 graduate of Lawrence High School. He received a Bachelor of Science degree in international finance and commerce in 2001 from Georgetown University. He graduated magna cum laude and was invited to join the Phi Beta Kappa society. After graduation, he became a senior associate consultant for Bain and Co. in Boston. His parents are Tom and Katy Hochstetler, Estes Park, Colo., and formerly of Lawrence. His grandmother Betty Dutton, Estes Park, Colo., also is a former Lawrence resident.
  • Christine Pool, Baldwin, made the Baker University honor roll and national dean’s list. The 2003 Bishop Seabury Academy graduate is the daughter of Jan Pool, Lawrence, and Paul and Teri Pool, Blue Springs.
  • Stephanie Chamberlain, Lawrence, and Kyle Kelsay, Oskaloosa, made the 2004 spring semester dean’s list at Avila University, Kansas City, Mo., by receiving at least a 3.5 grade-point average.
  • Anna Schmalz, a 2004 Free State High School student, has accepted a $750 Crissman Endowed Scholarship to attend Fort Hays State University for the 2004-2005 academic year. Anna is the daughter of Mary and Jerry Schmalz, Lawrence. She plans to study health and human performance at FHSU.
  • Nicholas Pavlov, son of Lawrence residents John and Linda Surritte, made the dean’s list during the spring 2004 semester at the University of North Texas by receiving all As. Nicholas just returned from London, where he took a study abroad class in British politics.
  • Tom Murray, a 2000 graduate of Lawrence High School, received a Bachelor of Arts degree on June 1 from Princeton University. He graduated with honors in politics. At Princeton, he played offensive line and tight end for the varsity football team. He was a member of Cap and Gown Eating Club and was elected to membership in The 21 Club. His senior thesis, required of all Princeton graduates, was entitled, “Antitrust, Athletics, and Amateurism: A Legal Analysis of College Football’s Bowl Championship Series.” He now lives in Washington, D.C. He is the son of Cindy and Tom Murray, Lawrence, and the grandson of Jane Barber, Lawrence.
  • Susie Warden, daughter of Susan Warden and John Staples, has been accepted to the 2004 Summer Seminar for High School Juniors at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival in Ashland, Ore. Susie is a junior at Bishop Seabury Academy. The summer seminar brings together 65 students from around the country to attend performances of nine OSF productions, engage in daily discussions and workshops with members of the festival artistic and administrative staff, and develop creative projects that will apply to the arts needs in their schools and communities. The juniors selected to participate in the seminar are motivated, self-disciplined and highly dedicated to theater and performing arts.
  • Bryan Spangler, Lawrence, made the dean’s list with distinction during the fall 2003 and spring 2004 semesters at Virginia Tech University by maintaining at least a 3.75 grade-point average. Spangler, who is studying computer science, participates in the Honors Program.
  • Dhwani Shah, daughter of Naina Shah and Kiren Shah, of Lawrence, has been named to the honor roll for the spring 2004 semester at Saint Mary’s School in Raleigh, N.C., by receiving at least a 3.5 grade-point average.
  • Emily Petr, Lawrence, was named to the dean’s honor roll for the 2004 spring semester at Abilene Christian University, Abilene, Texas, by earning at least a 3.45 grade-point average.
  • Jeremiah Thomas has been named to the spring 2004 dean’s list at Southwest Baptist University, Bolivar, Mo., by earning at least a 3.5 grade-point average. He also received a degree in criminal justice in May. Thomas, a 1998 Lawrence High School graduate, is the son of James and Susan Thomas, Lawrence.
  • Matapony Collette, Lecompton, made the honorable mention honor roll for the spring 2004 semester at McPherson College, by receiving at least a 3.25 grade-point average.
