Wilkes headed to Cal

Former Kansas University basketball player Omar Wilkes has decided to transfer to the University of California-Berkeley.

Wilkes, a 6-foot-4 guard from Los Angeles, on Tuesday announced he had chosen Ben Braun’s Golden Bears over runner-up Stanford.

Cal recruited Wilkes heavily out of high school.

“It was just a great fit for me,” said Wilkes, whose brother, Jordan, a high school senior-to-be also is being recruited by Cal. “I felt very comfortable with coach Braun and his staff. I had a great rapport with the players (on recent visit) and really enjoy the surrounding area.

“It’s a school with an academic reputation that is unparalleled, and the basketball program is right on the cusp of great things.”

Wilkes’ dad, Jamaal, played for the Golden State Warriors from 1975 to ’77, averaging 14.2 points as a rookie on the 1975 NBA champions.

“I have aunts, uncles, cousins … all kinds of people there,” Wilkes said.

He will sit out a season in accordance with NCAA rules. He’ll be a sophomore in 2005-06 when the Bears play Kansas at Kemper Arena.

“It will give me time to learn the system, get stronger and better and become familiar with the school,” Wilkes said.
