Tours to visit historic sites

Reservations are being accepted for tours connected with next week’s Bleeding Kansas Chautauqua in Lawrence.

The Chautauqua runs June 24-29 and is sponsored by the Kansas Humanities Council.

Reservations for the tours can be made by calling the Lawrence Visitor Information Center at 865-4499.

Tours include:

  • Quindaro Ruins Tour, 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. June 25.

The tour, which will depart from the Lawrence Visitor Information Center, 402 N. Second St., will include stops at the John Brown statue, brewery and cemetery, all located in the Quindaro section of Kansas City, Kan. Cost is $25 and includes lunch.

  • Underground Railroad Tour, 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. June 26.

The tour, which leaves from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Information Center, 872 N. 1400 Road, includes breakfast at Mount Washington and lunch at the Clinton Lake Museum. The tour stops at Underground Railroad sites in the county and costs $25.

  • John Brown Tour of Kansas, 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. June 29.

This tour includes stops in Lawrence, Ottawa, Osawatomie and Baldwin to teach about Brown and Kansas’ entry as a free state. It departs from the Lawrence Visitor Information Center and costs $25.

  • Territorial History Trolley Tour, 3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. June 25; 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. June 26; and 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. June 27.

This horse-drawn trolley tour, which begins at the Eldridge Hotel, 701 Mass., discusses downtown Lawrence of the 1850s. Cost is $15.

  • Oak Hill Cemetery Tour, noon to 1 p.m. June 26 and 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. June 27.

This guided tour of cemetery plots includes many victims of Quantrill’s raid, abolitionist newspaper editor James Lane and others. It is free.

  • Pioneer Cemetery Tour, 1:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. June 28.

This tour of Pioneer Cemetery, on the Kansas University campus, includes discussion of Quantrill’s raid victims, Thomas Barber and soldiers from the 13th Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry who are buried there. The presentation is free.
