A 13-year-old Eudora girl died Sunday in Winfield, where she was staying while playing in a softball tournament, Winfield Police said.

Krystal Lynne Bateson was taken to a Winfield hospital late Saturday night or early Sunday morning, where she died. An autopsy was to be performed to determine the cause of death but no crime was suspected, Police Chief Jerry DeVore said. He did not know Monday when the autopsy results might be known.

Krystal’s mother, Kathy Bateson, reportedly noticed her daughter was ill while they were at a motel, and Krystal was taken to the hospital. The family had no comment.

In May, Krystal graduated from the eighth grade in Baldwin with academic honors. She was a member of the Lawrence Phenix Fast Pitch Assn.
