Cheyenne, Wyo., families have lowest tax bills

Wyoming is the home of grand things — Old Faithful and the Devil’s Tower — but not big tax bills.

Kiplinger’s Personal Finance magazine examined state and local tax assessments in each state’s most populous city, based on what an imaginary family of four with an annual income of $90,000 might pay.

Cheyenne, Wyo., was the lowest, collecting $2,220 on average per year. Houston was next, at $3,257, followed by Jacksonville, Fla. ($3,480); Memphis, Tenn. ($3,481); Sioux Falls, S.D. ($3,585); Las Vegas ($3,744); Manchester, N.H. ($3,814); Anchorage, Alaska ($4,151); Phoenix ($5,077); and Seattle ($5,387).

Not surprisingly, the highest tax burdens were on the East Coast, including five of the top 10.

Bridgeport, Conn., was most expensive, collecting $12,627 in state and local taxes. The nation’s biggest city, New York, was second, at $11,078. They were followed by Portland, Maine ($9,853); Baltimore ($9,020); Washington, D.C. ($8,986); Chicago ($8,862); Atlanta ($8,816); Portland, Ore. ($8,619); Los Angeles ($8,609); and Charlotte, N.C. ($8,554).

Wichita ranked 25th with a bill of $7,074. The findings will be in the magazine’s June 15 issue.
