Two standards?

To the editor:

Why is it our City Commission finds it necessary to run months of discussion — spending taxpayer money and time — to eliminate traditional fireworks celebrations in these times when we should be pulling together as a country, and yet they don’t find it reasonable to allow city employees to take the day off to honor one of our greatest presidents? (J-W, Thursday)

And that coming from a normally staunch Democrat.

Once again, the city of Lawrence seems to think it should make separate sets of rules regarding issues that obviously impact more than just Lawrence.

Do city commissioners believe federal and state employees care more about the loss of such a great man, President Ronald Reagan, than our city employees? I think not.
