Central United Methodist Church

Central United Methodist Church Women will have a salad luncheon celebrating 135 years of women working in mission from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday at Central United Methodist Church, 1501 Mass.

Seven United Methodist Women organizations from the area, the Five Rivers District officers and the Kansas East Conference officers from this region have been invited to attend.

Clinton Parkway Assembly of God

Junior and senior high classes will be studying “The End Times and Revelation” at 9:30 a.m. Sundays at Clinton Parkway Assembly of God, 3200 Clinton Parkway.

“Fun in the Son” for children in first through sixth grades is from 10 a.m. to noon Tuesdays.

Mothers and their preschoolers meet at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Holcom Park for “Play at the Park Day.”

Junior and senior high class party will be at 6 p.m. Sunday at the church.

Senior adults of the church will meet for a time of food and fellowship Friday. Guest speaker will be Joy Barnett. The topic is “Looking for Meaning to Life.”

Worship Involving Severely Handicapped will be at 10:30 a.m. June 19.

Faith Church of the Nazarene

Faith Church of the Nazarene, 1020 Kasold Drive, will have a celebration picnic at 5:30 p.m. Sunday.

The celebration is two-fold. The event will take place the same day as Children’s Sunday, so the church will celebrate the children God has given to the congregation. The picnic also will celebrate the completion of several property renovation and addition projects at the church.

The picnic will feature games and prizes. The event is free and open to the public.

First Church of the Nazarene

The community’s children age 4 through sixth grade are invited to attend vacation Bible school from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Monday through Friday at First Church of the Nazarene, 1470 N. 1000 Road.

First Presbyterian Church

The community is invited to attend “Under the Big Tent,” a church picnic, at 4 p.m. Sunday at First Presbyterian Church, 2415 Clinton Parkway.

Picnic will feature hot dogs and hamburgers, Dixieland music, the Balloon Man and a storyteller. The event also will kick off the church’s summer emphasis, “Listen to Our Stories.”

First United Methodist Church

First United Methodist Church, 946 Vt., will have a blood drive from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Sunday in Brady Hall.

The event will help support the Community Blood Center in its effort to provide blood to local hospital patients. Walk-ins are welcome.

Good Shepherd Lutheran Church

The senior high youth group of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church announces the return of the flamingos to Lawrence.

The group again will be placing pink, plastic flamingos on the lawns of Lawrence residents, $10 for a 24-hour visit. A flock consists of a dozen birds. Also available are “double flockings,” $20 for 24 flamingos. Greeting notes cost $2.

Please furnish the name and address of the flamingo-flock resident. Checks can be made out to GSLC-SHY. Funds raised go to support students attending the National Youth Gathering.

Immanuel Lutheran Church and University Student Center

The public is welcome at “Music on the Lawn” at 5:30 p.m. today at Immanuel Lutheran Church and University Student Center, 15th and Iowa streets.

Lawrence Wesleyan Church

The youth group of Lawrence Wesleyan Church, 3705 Clinton Parkway, and several other Lawrence youth groups will sponsor a concert from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday at the church.

The event will feature the music of the Sunflowerz, One Remedy and Sooner or Later. There will be inflatable outdoor games, a snack shop and video games.

Martha & Mary’s Way

Martha & Mary’s Way, a Lawrence interfaith ministry, will offer a day to walk a labrynth from 9 a.m. to noon June 19 in anticipation of the summer solstice.

The event will be an opportunity for personal reflection as the season changes. Walking the labrynth offers the chance to experience a metaphor for the journey of life. In times of transition and growth, such experiences offer meditation and clarity.

There is no charge to attend, but donations to the interfaith ministry are suggested.

Plymouth Congregational Church

As part of a yearlong, sesquicentennial celebration, Sunday worship services at Plymouth Congregational Church, 925 Vt., will feature a tribute to former Plymouth pastor John Felible.

New members will join Plymouth during worship services Sunday. Those who are interested in joining the church should call Kay Cerny at 843-3220.

Members of the Mother and Child group will meet from 11 a.m. to noon June 18 in the wading pool at South Park. Contact Cerny in the church office for more details.

St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church

A eucharistic procession on the feast of the Body and Blood of Christ will immediately be after the 2 p.m. Sunday Spanish liturgy at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, 1234 Ky.

Procession will take place on the parish grounds as the rosary is prayed in Spanish and English. After the procession, the Eucharistic Adoration Committee will have a homemade ice-cream social.

Knights of Columbus will have a parish appreciation cookout today. It will be after the 5:30 p.m. liturgy.

Trinity Episcopal Church

Zane Wilemon, youth director of Trinity Episcopal Church, 1011 Vt., leaves today to lead his missionary group — the Kenya Project — to the town of Maai Mahiu in Africa.

The town is on what is known as the AIDS Highway, a major trade route between Nairobi, Kenya, and Kampala, Uganda. The orphanage where the group will work serves about 140 children. Most of them are there because their parents have died of AIDS.

The group will be building classrooms for the children.

The Rev. Sam Mason will be the celebrant for both Sunday worship services. Deacon Rita Tracy will preach.

Trinity Lutheran Church

The monthly Communion coffee — a shortened version of a worship service, with Communion for those who find it difficult to attend a full, Sunday service — will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Trinity Lutheran Church, 1245 N.H.

Women’s book study group will meet at 6:30 p.m. Monday in the parsonage to study “Purpose No. 2” of “The Purpose Driven Life.”

Nine members of the Trinity youth group left Friday for a mission trip to Benton Harbor, Mich. The group will participate in service projects as part of the YouthWorks organization.

The Rev. Don Conrad, the church’s visitation pastor, will be honored on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of his ordination with a potluck supper and program at 6 p.m. June 19 at the church.

A scrapbook of memory letters and cards is being compiled for Conrad, who is also a former campus minister.

University Community of Christ

Power & Light Study group is at 9 a.m. Sunday at University Community of Christ, 1900 University Drive. Alice Norris will lead discussions focusing on Paul’s letters to the Corinthians.

Elder Novy Bowman will present the sermon at 10 a.m. Sunday services, which will be followed by a potluck luncheon buffet. Covered dishes and desserts are welcomed but not required. There is no charge for the meal.

Bible study is at 10 a.m. This is open to all church members, as well as anyone seeking a better understanding of Scripture. The class is studying the Book of John.

West Side Presbyterian Church

“SonGames” will be the theme of this year’s vacation Bible school at West Side Presbyterian Church, 1024 Kasold Drive.

Children age 4 through sixth grade are invited to participate in crafts, music and learning. Vacation Bible school is from 5:45 p.m. to 7:45 p.m. June 21-25. A light supper will be served each night. Marci Stanwix will lead the events.

The Session will meet at 6:30 p.m. Sunday. Martha Circle will meet at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at the church. Connie Ducey will be hostess, and Pat Rummer will lead the last lesson of the year.

West Side will lead the Vesper service at 3:30 p.m. Friday in the chapel at Presbyterian Manor. Elizabeth Gabel will assist.
