Incumbent challenged for education board seat

Incumbent State Board of Education member Bill Wagnon, a Topeka Democrat whose district includes the western half of Douglas County, will face a challenge in November’s general election.

Robert Meissner, a Topeka Republican, filed by Thursday’s deadline to run for the 4th District seat held by Wagnon since 1996. The 4th District also includes Osage, Shawnee and Wabaunsee counties.

Incumbents Sue Gamble, R-Shawnee, 2nd District, and Carol Rupe, R-Wichita, 8th District, face no opposition in August or November. The 2nd District includes Johnson and Wyandotte counties.

In the 6th District primary, incumbent Bruce Wyatt, R-Salina, faces Kathy Martin, R-Clay Center. In the 10th District primary, incumbent Steve Abrams, R-Arkansas City, faces Tim Aiken, R-Derby.

Janet Waugh, D-Kansas City, Kan., holds the District 1 seat on the board, which represents eastern Douglas County. Her term does not expire until 2007.

3 solicitors arrested for not having license

Lawrence Police arrested three door-to-door salesmen Thursday night for soliciting without a city-issued license.

Two of the men, a 38-year-old transient and a 27-year-old from Ogden, Utah, were arrested while trying to sell a cleaning product in the 800 block of Massachusetts Street.

The third, a 24-year-old from Cleveland, Ohio, was arrested in the 2000 block of Emerald Drive.

In all three cases, police initiated contact with the men after seeing them going door-to-door and failing to produce the city-issued photo ID required for solicitors.

All three men were booked into jail between roughly 7:30 p.m. and 9 p.m. They each posted $100 bond and were given notices to appear June 30 in municipal court.

City officials say one way for consumers to protect themselves when confronted with a door-to-door solicitor is to ask to see the person’s city ID. The license ensures that the person’s name, address, and business is on file at City Hall.
