Weather halts NCAA meet

Austin, Texas — Rain and lightning wiped out nearly all of the opening day of competition at the NCAA track and field championships Wednesday.

Kansas University sophomore Benson Chesang was scheduled to run in the 5,000-meter run qualifying Wednesday. The washed events will be rescheduled for later in the week.

Five other KU athletes are scheduled to compete in the national championships at Myers Track on the Texas University campus.

Senior Laura Lavoie will be in the 1,500-meter run prelims at 7:55 p.m. today. The Springfield, Mo., native finished fourth in the 1,500 at the NCAA Midwest Regional in a time of 4:29.44.

Junior Brooklyn Hann will compete in the qualifying round of the triple jump at 6:15 p.m. Friday. The Sacramento, Calif., native, finished fourth in the triple jump at the Midwest Regional and posted a season-best leap of 42-01/2 at the Kansas Relays.

Also representing KU will be the women’s 1,600 relay team of Duchess Williams, Octavia Garrett, Kim Clark and Hann.

Garciaparra back in lineup

Boston — Shortstop Nomar Garciaparra returned to the Red Sox lineup for the first time this season on Wednesday in Boston’s game against San Diego. Garciaparra, who singled in the second inning, finished 1-for-2, hitting a hard line drive in his only other at-bat before a 2-hour, 21-minute rain delay. He was replaced by Cesar Crespo when play resumed. Baseball on pages 4C-5C.
