Grief camp has openings

Midland Hospice Care is accepting registrations for Camp Caris. The camp runs from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday on a 22-acre wooded campus at 200 S.W. Frazier Circle in Topeka.

The camp is designed for children 5 to 16 years old who are grieving after the loss of a loved one. Children will hike, ride horseback, make crafts and receive counseling from trained counselors.

Camps also will be offered July 10 and 31. For more information, call Amy Schumacher or Gwen McClain at (785) 232-2044 or visit www.midlandhospice.org.

Festival brings tastes of Scotland

The Kansas prairie will ring with the sound of bagpipes Saturday when the 27th Annual Kansas City Scottish Highland Games comes to the Wyandotte County Fairgrounds in Kansas City, Kan.

Athletes will compete in traditional Scottish games such as stone and hammer throws and the caber toss, in which competitors toss wooden poles end-over-end. Bagpipers, drummers and dancers also will compete in traditional Scottish songs and dances, including the Sword Dance and the Highland Fling.

Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children. Children 6 or younger are free. Two canned or boxed food items for the Harvesters will reduce admission by a dollar.
