Brewers oulast Angels in 17

? Ben Sheets had nothing to do with this deluge of strikeouts.

Scott Podsednik doubled home the go-ahead run in the 17th inning, long after Sheets lost his bid for a perfect game, and the Milwaukee Brewers beat the Anaheim Angels, 1-0, Tuesday night.

Brewers batters struck out 26 times, tying the major-league record set by the Angels on July 9, 1971, in a 20-inning game against Oakland. Geoff Jenkins, who went 0-for-7, tied a big-league mark by striking out six times. Milwaukee’s Keith Ginter also went 0-for-7, striking out four times, and Ben Grieve went 0-for-6 with five strikeouts.

“Strikeouts aren’t a good record to have, but they came in a win. So you can turn the page pretty easily,” said Craig Counsell, who scored the game’s only run. “I’ve never seen a game like that before, and I probably never will again.”

Anaheim’s Jeff DaVanon and Raul Mondesi each went 0-for-7, and Alfredo Amezaga was 0-for-6 with four strikeouts. As a team, the Angels were 4-for-55.

Less than 21/2 weeks after striking out 18 at Atlanta, Sheets retired his first 20 batters before Vladimir Guerrero grounded a clean single through the left side.

Ramon Ortiz (2-5) walked Counsell with two outs in the 17th, and Podsednik drove a 1-0 pitch over Guerrero in right. Counsell scored just ahead of the relay throw from first baseman Casey Kotchman.
