Pleasant today, storms on the way

Lawrence ends a short work week with a short weather forecast — partly cloudy and warm.

“It’s another pleasant day to get out and enjoy,” said Matt Sayers, 6News meteorologist. “It’s just a tad warmer, but that huimidity does remain low.”

Morning temperatures were starting in the upper 50s, with a light mist out just before 8 a.m. at Lawrence Municipal Airport.

“Highs today top out at 82 degrees. That’s just one degree shy of our average,” Sayers said. The storms that were entering southwest Kansas this morning won’t reach northeast Kansas, he said.

However, another round of storms is headed in Lawrence’s direction on Saturday from Wyoming and western Nebraska.

The low will drop to 61 by early Saturday morning, with cloudy skies and the high reaching 78 by Saturday afternoon. Saturday was expected to remain dry until about 7 p.m., when a storm front moves in, bringing with it a slight chance of severe weather, Sayers said.

“Anything we do see would be hail and high winds,” he said.

He said the storms will probably be out of the area by early Sunday morning. Sunday morning’s low will be 62, with the high climbing to 82.

“If you like the warm weather, next week is made just for you,” Sayers said. “Next week, it will be 86 on Monday and 91 Tuesday — which would be the highest we’ve seen this year.”
