Raiders split season-opening doubleheader

? The Lawrence Raiders opened a long and busy summer schedule with a doubleheader split against Topeka Post 74 on Tuesday. The Raiders won the first game, 11-2, before dropping the nightcap 2-0.

Mill Valley graduate Tyson Corley pitched the Raiders to a first-game victory, allowing just single Topeka runs in the first and third innings. Lawrence scored four in the first and six more in the third, highlighted by a Ryan Engel three-run triple.

The Raiders, though, managed just four hits in the second game.

This year’s squad is made up of players from Lawrence High, Free State, Baldwin and Mill Valley. Coach Reggie Christiansen said team chemistry would be something that would have to evolve during the season.

“It might take us a little while to figure things out,” he said, “but I think we’ll be all right.”

The Raiders (1-1) will play a doubleheader against St. Joseph (Mo.) Post 11 at 6:30 p.m. today at Free State.
