Brown steps down as Silver Stars coach

San Antonio -- San Antonio Silver Stars coach Dee Brown resigned Friday, becoming the third coach in the WNBA to either step down or be fired this month.

A former NBA player with Boston, Toronto and Orlando, Brown apologized for the team's 6-18 record.

"I hope that this change will lead the team in a new direction," Brown said in a statement.

The team said assistants Shell Dailey and Vonn Read will share head coaching duties for the rest of the season. The announcement came prior to the team's home game against Phoenix.

The New York Liberty fired coach Richie Adubato July 3 after a 7-9 start.

Los Angeles Sparks coach Michael Cooper, who led the Sparks to WNBA titles in 2001 and 2002, resigned July 6 to become an assistant with the NBA's Denver Nuggets.
