Hurley Services

Private graveside services for Winifred L. Hurley, 88, Lawrence, will be at Memorial Park Cemetery.

Mrs. Hurley died Thursday, July 29, 2004, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital, after a long illness.

She was born Oct. 7, 1915, in Ackerland, the daughter of Lewis A. and Edith L. Wills Moses. She attended rural schools in Jefferson and Leavenworth counties, and graduated in 1933 from Liberty Memorial High School in Lawrence. She attended Lawrence Business College and Kansas University.

During World War II, Mrs. Hurley was a clerk at the Rationing Boards in Wellington and Lawrence. Later, she worked as secretary to E.R. Zook of the Lawrence Chamber of Commerce, and as a proofreader at the Kansas City Star and the Journal-World. In the 1960s she and her husband operated J&N Marking Products in Lawrence.

She was a charter member of Jayhawk Chapter of National Secretaries Assn., a 50-year member of Eastern Star, a past worthy matron of Adah Chapter of Eastern Star, and a member of First Christian Church.

She married Earlan R. Hurley on Oct. 30, 1933, in Ottawa. He died June 17, 1973.

Survivors include a son, Jack L. Hurley, Eagle Rock, Mo.; a daughter, Nancy L. Smith, Lawrence; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

The family suggests memorials to the American Heart Assn., sent in care of Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home.
