Randy and Deon (Wilson) Ostrander, Lingle, Wyo., announce the birth of a son, Riah Jude Ostrander, born July 9, 2004, at the Torrington Community Hospital in Torrington, Wyo.

Maternal grandparents are Tim and Carla Wilson, Lingle, Wyo., and formerly of Lawrence. Paternal grandparents are Randy and Julie Ostrander, Lingle, Wyo., and Terri Ostrander-Rose, Lapeer, Mich.

Great-grandparents are Carl and Joyce Burkhead, Dona Wilson and the late Dick Wilson, Lawrence; and Stan and Mary Ostrander, Baxter Tucker and Carol Tucker, Lapeer, Mich. Great-great grandparents are Perry and Jenette Quade and Betty O’Brien, Lapeer, Mich.

Seth and Lisa Martin, Lawrence, announce the birth of a son, Rider Cash Martin, born June 24, 2004, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.

  • Melissa Colgan, of Lawrence, placed 10th in the senior division overall competition at the American Junior Simmental Association National Classic XXIV July 19-23 in West Monroe, La.

There were about 300 association members who competed. Colgan ranked second in public speaking, third in sire summary and 14th in herdsman quiz.

Melissa was elected as to serve as national president of the association, which is based in Bozeman, Mont.

Deepyman Datta, a Southwest Junior High School ninth-grader, won the U.S. Junior Open Chess Championship in the Under-21 Division. The event was July 23-25 in Lindsborg. He qualifies to compete in the 2005 U.S. Junior Invitational Championship, which is restricted to only 10 of the top Under-21 Division players in the United States.

Several other Lawrence players placed as well: Alan Shi, Quail Run School, fourth grade, third-place trophy, Under-11 Division; Anjali Datta, SWJH, seventh grade, 10th place trophy, Under-15 Division; and Roy Wedge, Wakarusa Valley School, sixth grade, 11th place, Under-15 Division. Roy also won a first-place medal among 12-year-olds competing in the Under-15 Division.

  • Sarah Elizabeth Charnes, Lawrence, has accepted membership in the National Society of Collegiate Scholars, a highly selective, national, nonprofit honors organization which recognizes first- and second-year undergraduate students who excel academically. Sarah is a junior at Truman State University. She recently returned from London, where she studied public finance at the London School of Economics. She is the daughter of John and Suzanne Charnes, Lawrence.

  • MidAmerica Nazarene University, Olathe, announces area students who made honors during the spring 2004 semester.

Julie Beck and Kathryn Davis, both of De Soto, made the president’s list by earning a 4.0 grade-point average.

Students who made the dean’s list by earning a 3.5-3.99 GPA were: Ryan Chamberlin, Eudora; Jonathan Riley, Lawrence; Jean Mace, Ottawa; Amy Christian, Tecumseh; Sarah Mages, Tonganoxie; and Lauren Bohi, Wellsville.

Rebekah Vann and Jeffrey Breithaupt, Lawrence, and Matthew Rogers, Wellsville, made the honors list by receiving a 3.49-3.2 GPA.

  • Martin Eisert, a Lawrence High School student, received a full-tuition, room and board scholarship to attend The Marie Walsh Sharpe Art Foundation 2004 Summer Seminar Program. Martin attended the program July 4-17 at Colorado College in Colorado Springs, Colo. The program is designed as an art institute offering an intensive visual art studio program for gifted high school juniors.

  • Morgan Metzger, Dalton Walsh and D.J. Giermann, all of Lawrence, attended Level 1 of the Future Astronaut Training Program at the Kansas Cosmosphere and Space Center in Hutchinson. Morgan is the son of Mark and Vanessa Metzger. Dalton is the son of Derek and Brenda Walsh. D.J. is the son of Dale and Audrey Giermann.

Kimberly Mathews, Lawrence, attended Level 2 of the Future Astronaut Training Program at the space center. She is the daughter of Mark and Stephanie Mathews.

Benedictine College, Atchison, announces area students who made honors and graduated during the spring semester.

Patricia Leistner, Lawrence, and Theresa Fulks, Eudora, made the president’s honor list by earning a 4.0 grade-point average. Leistner also graduated with a degree in music education.

The following students made the dean’s list by receiving at least a 3.5 GPA: Ryan Marx, Zachary Pike and Ryan Wohletz, Basehor; Jessica Bryant, Eudora; Breanne Billings, Lawrence, and Duncan Pestock, Tonganoxie.
