Charles P. “Pete” McMillon

? Services for Charles P. “Pete” McMillon will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at United Methodist Church, Tonganoxie. Burial will be in Maple Grove Cemetery, south of Tonganoxie.

Mr. McMillon died Wednesday, July 28, 2004, at Tonganoxie Nursing Center.

He was born Sept. 28, 1920, in Asheville, N.C., the son of Charles Henry and Nellie Howard McMillon.

He worked his way through college at Furman University, Greenville, S.C., as an auto mechanic. He majored in engineering and religion.

Mr. McMillon worked as an instructor at Souther Field in Americus, Ga., with the 56th Army Air Forces Flying Training detachment from 1942 to 1944. On July 16, 1943, he was inducted into the U.S. Air Corps Enlisted Reserve at Fort McPherson, Ga., and was honorably discharged on July 30, 1945.

He then joined Transcontinental and Western Air, and was stationed out of Washington, D.C. He transferred to Kansas City in 1947. In later years he flew as a check pilot. He retired in 1980 after 36 years with TWA.

Mr. McMillon was also a master electrician, boat builder, house builder, plane builder, hunter and mechanic.

He joined United Methodist Church in 1963 and was an active member, serving as trustee for several years. He was a 32nd degree Mason and past master of Henri Lodge No. 190. He was a member of the Order of Eastern Star and served as worthy patron nine times. He also belonged to the Amateur Trapshooting Assn. and won several championship trophies in the sport.

He married Mildred Elizabeth Greene on Dec. 16, 1944, in Americus, Ga. She survives, of the home.

Other survivors include two daughters, Betty Grey, Kansas City, Kan., and Sandria Godwin-Vazquez, Franklin, Tenn.; three grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

A son, Dwight David, died in 1952.

The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. today at Quisenberry Funeral Home, Tonganoxie.
